Finding Confidence, Companionship, and a New Lease on Life: JS’s Journey at The Lodge
When JS arrived at The Lodge in June 2023, she was a shadow of the woman she once was. At 89 years old, she came to us from Broomfield Hospital - a nervous, reserved lady who had lost her sense of confidence and comfort in the world around her. Change was daunting for her, and the thought of unfamiliar faces and spaces filled her with anxiety.
From the moment she stepped through our doors, we knew that patience, kindness, and unwavering support would be the keys to unlocking the warmth and joy she had hidden away. JS struggled to be around more than one carer at a time, and the idea of leaving the security of her bedroom was overwhelming. Even the mere thought of stepping into the lounge would send her into a panic. So, we took things at her pace, letting her feel safe, seen, and supported every step of the way.
Our Home Manager, Clare, took a special role in JS’s journey, spending time with her daily, gently building her trust and confidence. It started with small steps - just standing outside her bedroom door, reassuring her that she was in control and nothing bad would happen. Gradually, those moments extended, first into the hallway, then further along, until one day, she reached the garden.
It was in the garden that we saw the first spark of the real JS. She adored the fresh air, the flowers, the birds chirping - it was a space where she felt safe and at ease. We would sit together for long conversations, sharing stories and laughter. The more she ventured outdoors, the more her confidence grew. Slowly, she began to open up to other residents, forming friendships that warmed her heart and lifted her spirits.
Then came a moment that changed everything. One afternoon, Albert, our visiting therapy dog, trotted into the lounge, tail wagging, full of gentle energy and affection. JS’s eyes lit up as she spotted him from the hallway. For the first time, she wanted to go into the lounge. With reassurance and encouragement, she stepped inside. She stroked Albert, chatted with fellow residents, and for the first time, she stayed. We made her a cup of tea, and she sat comfortably, smiling, talking, enjoying the moment. It was as if a door had opened, leading her back to the warmth of human connection.
Since that day, JS has blossomed into a social butterfly. She spends most of her time in the lounge, happily joining in activities, laughing with friends, and embracing the vibrant community around her. She no longer isolates herself or shies away from people. She has rediscovered her joy, her independence, and her love for life.
JS is no longer the nervous lady who first arrived at The Lodge. She is now an active, happy, and sociable woman who has truly found her place in our home. Her journey is a testament to the power of patience, compassion, and the unwavering belief that, with the right care and support, every person can rediscover their sense of belonging and happiness.
At The Lodge, we don’t just provide care - we create a home, a family, and a future filled with hope.
